Silent cinema did not die with the arrival of sound in 1927: it was almost completely displaced in the commercial industry, but maintained a continuous presence as experimental and avant-garde practice. What has changed in the last decade is scale and visibility: directors working outside the Hollywood circuit are producing feature films without dialogue that compete at top-tier festivals and generate critical and public conversation.
The most notable precedent in the 21st century was "The Artist" (2011), by Michel Hazanavicius, which won the Oscar for best picture and rekindled interest in the narrative possibilities of the format. But the current renaissance is less nostalgic and more experimental. Directors like Robert Eggers in his early work, or European art cinema filmmakers, explore silence not as a limitation but as a tool: the absence of dialogue forces the image to communicate what words would cover, generating a different narrative density.
The audience that finds in these films something conventional cinema does not provide is small but loyal. Festivals like Cannes, Berlin and Sundance regularly include works that dispense with dialogue entirely or almost entirely. In the context of streaming, where content competes for attention in seconds, the dialogue-free film is almost a statement of intent: it demands a type of active attention that the viewer must choose to give. That demand is not an obstacle for its natural audience but part of its appeal.
