This page goes beyond the institutional about. It is where we explain the decisions we make, the ones we do not, and why.

Why Virela exists

Virela started from a simple question: why do Spanish-language outlets keep choosing maximum friction — popups, aggressive banners, dark patterns, misleading headlines — when there are readers who would pay, or at least tolerate advertising, if the experience were decent?

We do not have a perfect answer. But we operate on the hypothesis that a media outlet can be sustainable without destroying the reader experience. That is what we are testing.

How we work

We produce editorial content with the help of AI tools to reduce operational overhead, but every editorial decision is human. No article is published without a review confirming it has real value for the reader.

We use open-source technology, measure what matters (reading time, return visits, retention) and discard what does not (vanity metrics). We change our minds when the data justifies it.

Editorial principles

Reader first: every design, monetisation and distribution decision goes through the question of whether it degrades the reading experience.
Transparency about commercial agreements: sponsored content is always clearly labelled, without ambiguity.
Quality over speed: we prefer to publish less and well rather than a lot and poorly. Urgency does not justify mediocrity.
Open code and data where possible: if something we do can help other independent outlets, we share it.
No dark patterns: no fake counters, artificial urgency, disguised subscriptions or aggressive pop-ups.

Virela runs on Next.js, PostgreSQL and Railway. The CMS is custom-built for the specific editorial use case we need.

When we document something interesting from our technical process, we publish it. We believe independent digital media benefit from sharing what works.
