Saying no is not selfish. Setting clear boundaries is necessary to maintain healthy relationships and protect your mental energy.

The difficulty of saying no has well-documented cultural and psychological roots. In many cultures, especially those with high collectivist orientation, unconditional availability for others is a positive social value and refusal is perceived as conflict or lack of commitment. At the individual level, fear of rejection, disapproval or relationship breakdown drives many people to say yes when they feel no, accumulating commitments they cannot fulfil with quality or that deteriorate their well-being.
Cognitive-behavioural psychology identifies compulsive "yes-saying" as a self-reinforcing pattern: each time you say yes out of fear and avoid the discomfort of an immediate no, you reinforce the pattern and make the next no more difficult. The intervention is not simply "learn to say no" but working on the underlying beliefs: that self-worth does not depend on constant availability to others, that a respectful refusal does not destroy healthy relationships, and that others have more capacity to adapt to a no than one attributes to them.
Clear boundaries not only protect one's own energy and time — they also improve the quality of the yeses one gives. When a person accepts a genuine commitment, with real availability and resources, the result for both parties is better than when they accept out of social pressure and deliver half of what they could give. In long-term relationships, professional or personal, the ability to say no honestly builds credibility: the yes of someone who says no when they cannot is worth more than the permanent yes of someone whose yes does not distinguish between what is possible and what is not.
